sketching habit

roar sketch
I have a thing I do I sketch myself into a corner. does anyone else do that? or have a strange sketching habit?
you can see above I was sketching and then had to add some paper when I got to the girl. it was amazing how much easier it was to work on her stance when I had a bit more room to breath in. when I wasn't right up against the spiral. silly but true.
I also am beginning to sketch larger, which is kind of weird for me. Only because when I began sketching my figures were really really tiny. thumbnails even. now I like that things are more fleshed out. It helps me when I get to the painting too. I guess that is what practice will get you.
I have an art crush on Blaine Fontana. I think I first saw his work written about in drawn. But his style rocks. He has nature and urban elements combined with fantastic style of templings and animals. I missed his hunted show twice at lab101. The first time I got the dates wrong and the second time I thought it was the last day, but actually they were taking it down. I am still kicking myself, but not as much if I hadn't tried to make it at all!
I read that he doesn’t sketch first on to the painting, he jumps in head first. I would love to get inside his head and see what he is thinking. How he makes those leaps. {Johanna does that too…lets the canvas tell her what to paint. She has some art going up at last exit in Brooklyn in a couple of weeks.}
Blaine has a couple really cool videos on you tube. Talking about his new work and these great time-lapse pieces & just walking through his studio. And I just found out he has a blog!
For all you google reader and blogline viewers my web guru fixed my issue with the images not showing up, so yeah now they do, sorry 'bout that.
A little closer on the roar sketch. I am going to put some clothes on her, {because it is not that kind of a circus} but I am trying to pratice "happier" breasts.

so awesome Wendy… i unfortunately can’t relate about the sketching bit, not much of an artist i’m afraid… so taking that into account, i think this is so great. the roar bit is amazing and i love that she’s wearing heels.

I just love this sketch, you have a real gift. Looking at it I can hear and feel the roar, I love what you did with her hair! Your work, from what I have seen on your blog is beautiful. Thanks for sharing your gift.

I think this sketch is wonderful and you should keep it as is. Sometimes work doesn’t need to be taken any further and looks good in the “rough” stages.
I think this piece has so much movement and you can tell just sense the sound he is making.

well, this is brilliant and so natural almost like spontaneously produced.

Yes, I’d back into a corner, too, if that bear were growling at me.

liz - for some reason I draw my girls how I would like to dress, ruffles on my underwear, cute shoes, and awesome outfits…maybe one day I’ll be ready for that.
melanie - thank you for coming by and saying such nice things, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy!
lisa s - those are lovely words coming from you. thank you…
johanna - thanks lady…are you around today??
jessica - I have some plans for this girl and bear to meet some paint, but maybe I’ll try and do some inking for this piece.
samara - thank you so much…I have come a long way with my sketches…thanks too for stopping by!
gracia - I didn’t even think of it in regards to the image as well…I like the idea that I might have done it on purpose!

Wenders, maybe it’s just me but I think the image takes a lot of its power from her lack of clothing. It would be offensive - and stand out from the rest of your images - if it seemed like her clothes had been taken from her or that she was in some way a victim. But the complete calm on her face amidst the roar and blowing hair - I dunno. I think it works as is.
Plus, you could simply call the painting “Bare”.
